I recently received a discharge from bankruptcy, it has not been a year yet, and I have fallen ill so I have not really tried to re-apply for a job yet. Before that bankruptcy, I had a stable job as lecturer at a community college, and I have gotten in so much personal issues and have fallen into debt, hence the bankruptcy. That was my one and only job after college it was pretty fine until it went wrong, now I'm just concerned about discrimination and prejudices. I am almost afraid to go out and find out for myself. Can somebody give me an advice. Thank you in advance.

Since your discharge was so recent, your credit report would be in bad shape, and since you have been ill too, is it right to presume that you haven't yet taken any step to repair your credit yet?And I think that as long as you are honest with your future employers regarding your history, and that you are confident about your teaching competency, the bankruptcy should not be a problem for you. Also I read somewhere that it is against the law for employers to discriminate against someone who's filed bankruptcy.

You should go out and try again. I think a bankruptcy would only really have a negative impact on someone's job application if the job is with the government or financial institution. Try applying in privately run schools and just be honest with your history. Also whatever it is that you are teaching, maybe you'd want to attend a refresher's course before going in again, just to boost your confidence and your chances at getting hired.

If for example, your job application was rejected because of your credit information, the law requires for that employer to give you a copy of that report and explanation of your FCRA rights. The employer should also tell you which company provided that credit information, that company's contact details, and your right to dispute its accuracy.Under 11 U.S.C. employers can't discriminate against consumers who have filed bankruptcy. If you are not informed that a background check is being done on you, that also is a violation of the FCRA (Fair Credit Reporting Act), because it needs your "ok" for it to proceed. If any of this happens to you, consult with a labor attorney.

Obtain a copy of your credit report and look for other negative marks. If you find that there are errors there, dispute them. If bankruptcy is the only negative mark in your credit report and you are applying for a job that does not require a security clearance, it should not affect your application. However, if your future employer generally just does not like you, he/she can find ways to not hire you--under all sorts of reasons.

Also try to order a copy of your credit report..perhaps there are negativeitems there that are affecting your job search. If ever there are inaccuratedetails there, you have the right to challenge them - it won't cost you money.
