I know that most credit counseling agencies are non-profit, but what about the employees? How do those counselors get paid?

I have read in multiple places that credit counselors get a paid between $12-$18 per hour. Can anyone actually confirm this? I am not positive because I have also seen some reasources that have alluded to credit counselors being paid on salary.

I have been doing some research on this topic and have found that in general, the median salary for credit counselors is roughly $35 K per year. Of course, it depends on the credit counseling agency they work for, how long they have been in the industry and other factors but that is a start!

Yeah credit counselors are "non-profit" all right. The people who run those agencies make well into the six-figures. You can look it all up because the government is required to make that information public since they are a "non-profit." All those agencies get paid substantial kick-backs from the credit card companies through Fair Share, where they get a portion of what their clients pay, not to mention fees on top of that.

And really it makes sense. The credit card companies have a reason to reward these agencies and provide kickbacks for their efforts. The more people these credit counseling agencies enroll into their debt management programs the more people they prevent from falling behind. As a result, the credit card companies can continue raking in the interest each month even if they have to lower the rate a bit.

Do credit counselors need a training/certification to get hired or get paid?

Not really...but many credit counseling agencies require their counselors to be certified as it's perhaps a requirement to be a part of a credit counseling association.
