Or does it take longer? Anyone know how long exactly it takes to chase a debt?

Hi Mr. Jones, I am not sure I understand your question. Are you wondering if debt collectors can try and collect on a past due account after 6 years have passed? If so you may be referring to the Statute of Limitations for credit card debt. Each state has a different law, so it would depend on where you live. In some states, written contracts expire before 6 years so the Statute of Limitations would have passed. Below is a link that shows the Statute of Limitations for every state in the U.S. http://www.creditcards.com/credit-card-news/credit-card-state-statute-limitations-1282.php If this is not your question please clarify. I would assume if not you may also be asking how long a debt stays on your credit report?

Can a debt be chased after 6 years?"Chased" yes...the collectors would attempt anything to collect, so the consumer should be vigilant  and not admit to the debt nor promise to pay it without checking the state's SoL

Can a debt be chased after 6 years? In California though, that might not be the case, as their SoL there is only for 4 years.

I think it depends on the SoL of the state you live in.People can chase debts as long as they like but they can'n necessarily collect them.
