I've been doing some reading on Islam and I found out that the religion actually allows and encourages their believers to assume debt--but only within the affordable limits. According to a study conducted on Islam and Debt, the prophet Muhammad regards those who pay off debt promptly and responsibly as "the best among you." In the same way, Muslims are discouraged from incurring debts that they do not have the means or intention to pay. Heavy debt is regarded as something that may have a serious effect on the person's beliefs, as it may lead to harmful consequences. One can only incur debt in circumstances of real necessity.

Namaste.I'd like to share this quote regarding debt:Concerning the debt owed to the Law, the Law is the teacher of all Buddhas. It is because of the Law that the Buddhas are worthy of respect. Therefore, those who wish to repay their debt to the Buddha must repay the debt they owe to the Law.It simply means that if you owe anybody anything, it is your responsibility to pay it so as not to destroy the natural order of nature. There has to be balance in the way we should conduct our lives.

From a Judeo-Christian perspective:According to
Deuteronomy 15:2:This is how it is to be done: Every creditor shall cancel any loan they have made to another Israelite. They shall not require payment from anyone among their own people, because the Lord's time for canceling debts has been proclaimed. This is speaking of love for one's own people and to keep the peace within their community.

Debt and religion - the Jewish and Christian tradition are somewhat alike in their view of debt and religion. There would be "forgiveness" in their texts. The Buddhists would refer to their set of virtues, and not one of them is about oppression. The Atheist would probably get theirs within some set of codes or laws - like the sciences. The Scientology and the new age groups - is, you are correct, kellipickels, ...I have no idea.
