Knowing when to file bankruptcy is obviously really important. If you have no savings, no disposable income, no assets and nowhere to turn for financial assistance filing bankruptcy may be your only option.

When to file bankruptcy?

When you have completed that mandatory pre-bankruptcy credit counseling course. The purpose of which is that you'd know that there are a couple of alternatives to bankruptcy available to you. The government discourages consumers from making bankruptcy their first option as it costs.

If you'd like to have your financial situation assessed for free,  before going through that mandatory credit counseling which would cost you around $50.00 to $75.00, fill out a form here at destroydebt.com -- speak with a debt consultant and ask all your questions.

I bet there are cases in which it didn't even cross the consumer's mind to ask the question "when to file bankruptcy?" -- they just plunged in and see how it goes.

I agree with that and they probably learned a lesson or two from that experience. Also it probably happened before the 2005 amendment. Nowadays, it's pretty tough to file bankruptcy, that's why it's important to ask when to file bankruptcy - ahead of time.
