What if you have already done this?  No really- we don't eat out or order take out as much as we used to.  It has saved a lot of money.

For my family, our big entertainment expense is Netflix ($30 monthly); Internet ($45 monthly) and basic cable ($10 monthly). We could easily get rid of basic cable and live happily. I could cut my Netflix membership down to ten dollars or less monthly and live well. But, I could not live without my high speed broadband. I did that for ten years and my life was miserable. Sure, there was plenty of time to do other things, but I never did any of them. For me, the Internet is a lifeline that opens the world of knowledge; learning and education.

I feel lucky that we have a 1$ movie theater here, and it is a cheap way we can still have an evening out! While we've cut our entertainment type expenses, this is something we can still afford to to often, which is nice.

I'm not in expenses like that because I can actually do things like watching movies indoor, nevertheless you have friends would actually invite you to go out and you can't even say no to them..

My fiance and I don't spend that much on entertainment outside of the home. We much rather and really prefer to stay at home then to go out to watch a movie or etc. So for me atleast, this won't help for learning how to / saving more. Great discussion though.

Cutting back is definitely a necessity to keeping and saving money and getting out of debt.  One of the two things we cut back on the most are electricity and entertainment.  It is still important to have some fun.  Remember the saying..."all work and no play makes for a very dull life"  We have to have some forms of entertainment to keep our sanity. We rarely if ever went to the theatre, most often we watch tv or rent a video from family video.  I have a limit of $10.00 a month for this little splurge.  Also, we do not frequent fast food restaurants as much as we use to, which was about once a week.  Now it's more like once a month.
