Have you tried using one? It's one way to address identity theft. It functions like a pre paid card whose number is randomly generated. You can set your credit limit. The only drawback I heard is that this is only good for online transactions.

Citibank has something similar where they generate a virtual account number every time you purchase something online. It is helpful to prevent your credit card number from getting hijacked and is really easy to use.

I have two Virtual Money credit cards, I got them through surf sites. I paid $19.95 for them. When the sites went down I lost the money on the cards. I had to pay $4.95 monthly fees. I'll never buy virtual Money cards again.

This is the first I've heard about virtual credit cards. Interesting.

Virtual credit cards are excellent, I wouldn't use them through a separate company though. Instead I get mine through my bank. I simply type in the limit on it and presto I get a number to use! Very good.

Paypal has a similar system.  If a site does not accept paypal, then they generate a temporary one time use debit card number with attached amount and you can use that on the purchase at the site. You'd have to get the paypal browser plug in for that to work.

It's a good alternative to credit cards, to avoid piling up debts. But you need to find a good reliable company with no monthly fees.
