I agree, it is very important to be able to differentiate what things you actually need, and what things you want. That's why I think it is really important to have a budget. You can pay for all the needs, and then see what you have left over for the wants.

Living within your means is very important right now, however, it seems a lot of people have trouble doing so. Personally, I just don't get it. Is making sure you have a satellite dish worth stressing over if you're going to make the gas bill? Make a list of needs and wants, that's good but sometimes even that won't cut it if you're really strapped. Beyond that, you need to prioritize. What bills have to be paid NOW and what bills can wait a little bit longer. If your electric is up for disconnect, then obviously it's time to pay that bill. But if Gas is only a week late, and something more pressing, such as the electric disconnect occurs, then Gas needs to be set aside. It's also important to know where you can go to get assistance, and to not be too proud to take the help. We're all dealing with financial struggles, there is no shame in saying "hey I could use a little help."
