Are You In Default On Your Student Loan?

I was doing some research for on student loans and came across a type of consolidation loan from the US Dept. of Education called a Direct Consolidation loan that is available for all students, even those with defaulted loans.
Have you taken advantage and consolidated your student loans with this type of loan? What was your personal experience? Were the payments signifigantly lower?
