Better Business Bureau is a great way to do this. You can also ask for their nonprofit business number and cross check that.

I agree with BBB but how about those companies existing online? Does BBB also review them and can we rely on the results?

I agree. The most common statement that these companies say is that they only wish to share their experience. The best thing to do is just be open for suggestions but never to rely on others to get rid of your debts for you.

I agree with you, but the thing is sometimes they miss or don't know about some of these crooks.

Yes, but their has to be exceptions for companies such as "saint vincent de paul, and the read cross". Don't take this into account for charities but it is a must to follow for non charitable organizations.

i have seen that too, and just google BBB with the type of company you are looking for.

the best method to check on the non profit organizations is to check if they are present on the list issued by the government. if they are present in that list then its fine, otherwise you got to be careful while dealing with those NGOs.
