I am a US Army veteran and when I separated from service, I decided I would go to college. I enrolled in an online degree that would last approx. 14 months. I was working part-time for a little while, but then decided to stay home and just concentrate on school. I was receiving disbursements from my GI Bill which I really should have used to pay directly to the school for my tuition. However, I decided to live on this money because I wasn't working and applied for student loans. 6 months after completing my degree I had to start making payments on these loans...and now when I look back on it...I made a big mistake!!! Why didn't I just keep working so that I could live? In reality, more than 3/4 of my house bills were being paid by my husband (only boyfriend at the time--we lived together) I only really had to worry about my individual bills. Each month I'm paying about $150 towards my almost $13,000 loan....WOW That money could sooooo being going somewhere else if I had just spent my GI BILL money differently.

It happens. But at least you learned a valuable lesson from this experience. That counts for something, I suppose.
