I wrote an article about this under "student loans" (: i'd reccommend they get jobs, try and help them out with accommodation as much as possible or accept uni accommadation if it's offered, try to ride a bike to uni or walk or liftshare, eat cheap fresh foods (don't eat out) and if renting, share with roommates to cut the cost. books can also be purchased second-hand to save money! best of luck to them ! (:

No credit cards is my best piece of advice! I also think it's a great idea to get a part time job on campus. They pay just enough to help the students buy what they need to buy and they shouldn't interfere with their studies!

Just dont let them apply for credit cards. Best is to ask them look for part time jobs if they want to apply for credit cards. Let them know that its not easy making a leaving outside.
Or if they insists on credit cards, let them support themselves by not giving them pocket allowance. They will then know how tough it is earning money.
