Some companies conducting debt counseling were too good to be true. Terms such as "wipe out your debt", non profit, higher fees than $20 must be avoided. Asses it yourself and ask for consultation to someone you can be trusted.
I think a lot of debt can be cleared on your own. You just have to take the time to work the system yourself. Read up on tips from the Internet, books, etc.
There are a lot of non profit counselling agencies out there, it just takes some research. Those are the ones you want to look into.

Yes but there are those companies taking advantage of people and making money off on them. So research is really needed before deciding.

Exactly, sometimes people just dont think twice before entering into a contract with such companies claiming to clear their situation. They are so depressed that their mind fails to function logically and practical.

I actually saw one advertisement where it said that clear your debt and pay us later. I dont know if one should trust it or not. But its a tempting offer, dont you think so :)

Those are called teaser terms to get the customer attention.
Its all part of the way they market their product. Even if their not reliable, some good marketing can change a customers perception about them totally.Marketing can make a criminal look like a choir boy.
it's better to go to non profit counselling agencies and ask your friends for advice , mostly do it by yourself
taking control of yourself is key there too. a lot of people just dont take the time. the information IS out there. this forum is a classic example.
