Which is the best credit card to have?
I know you can shop around on interest repayments, but what about when you factor other things into account such as points systems and discount bonuses you get with some cards?

I think it's just the interest rate. I remember credit cards used to be around 20% APR and above, but nowadays they're usually nearer half.

You really need to shop around on interest rates because this is where the companies can really get you if you're not careful. Forget free transfers and just look at the normal non-promotional interest rate because that's the figure you're really going to have to fight with.

I would agree it has to do with the interest rate. I had a card with a very high interest rate and then ended that and got one a lot lower. Otherwise I think that all cards are about the same.

I also think that credits cards are all the same. I just try to keep them paid up.

Definitely American Express in my opinion. You have to pay the balance in full each month so there is no temptation to carry debt, and the membership rewards points are extremely useful.

American Express cards have other advantages. There is no upper spending limit, so that if you have an emergency that requires you to purchase a very expensive last minute plane ticket, or a huge car repair bill, you don't have to worry about your credit limit. I once saw someone use three different credit cards at a garage, paying for his repairs with the small amount he had left on each card. It wasn't pretty.

I have always had a visa card, I really don't know if it is the best. I know I don't like credit cards that have annual fees. I get literature in the mail everyday on different cards, but I'm not interested in them. (I'll just stick with my Visa).

Credit cards with good customer support. Those which can swiftly act on your concerns. Cards which also offer rewards or points are good to have.

American Express, Chase, Visa/Mastercard and Discover, can all be good. You'll have to search and see which card will suit your needs. All credit cards come with many incentives to attract new customers.
