The Rule of 72 is a basic way of mentally calculating how long it would take to double an investment. In most instances, the figure you arrive at is almost always just an approximation of the true duration (or period) because a more accurate way to calculate it is by using scientific calculators. However, the Rule of 72 provides a faster way to estimate investment growth. The rule is this: take the interest per annum and divide 72 by that figure to get the period by which the investment doubles. So if your investment has an interest rate of 5% per year, 72 divided by 5 equals 14.4, so you roughly have a little over 14 years to double that investment.

Hey I took a Finance course in college and we covered the rule of 72. Spoiledbrat802 however pretty much told you exactly what to do. You just take the interest rate per year and divide 72 into that interest rate and that will tell you long it would take to double your investment roughly. It works for compounding interest.
