Posted on March 30, 2009 at 1:44 pm Recently, I read a news article about a family who is attempting to live on $1.00 daily, to raise awareness about people living in poverty.  And while I think it's a noble cause, I'm not sure it's possible to acheive that goal for most people. I guess it's possible to live on $1.00 daily for food, assuming you grow your own garden veggies and fruits. But that might not be enough for other expenses. In a pinch, you could survive on $1.00 food daily when you cook with basics like beans, rice and pasta. And, growing your own fruits/veggies would take your costs down to zero for food budget. If you lived with friends or family you wouldn't have to pay rent.  And, you could simply bicycle to work.  That would save on gas costs. In my family, I can make entire pasta meals (including beef, pasta and sauce) for just around $1.00! In the past, I've done very well surving on $25 weekly for food bill.  Of course that was long before my daughter arrived.  Since then our grocery bill has sky rocketed. But, we still have rent and other costs, so it's not possible for us to live on $1.00 daily. Could you survive on $1.00 daily?  

Posted on March 30, 2009 at 1:49 pm How do they calculate that? the intake of food from one person would excede a dollar. And even a garden costs money you may need to water it and the seeds to plant would cost as well. What about electricity?

Posted on March 31, 2009 at 9:07 am I don't see how it's possible either, but this one family is really giving it a try. I think that they are going to prove that it's possible cause they don't have children.  When a famly has children, the bills always go up.

Posted on March 31, 2009 at 9:08 am You'e right! It's a good theory, but can it be accomplished?  I'm not so sure.  We shall see. Not for my family though.  Our daily expenses are so high right now.

Posted on March 31, 2009 at 9:15 am Wow in my case I could survive if you mean that all 4 of my family members have 1 dollar but life would be pathetic. I pay around 20 dollars just for internet now:)

Posted on March 31, 2009 at 9:18 am $1 a day? that's too much...probably if you'll eat only once...and still $1 can't cover for a full meal...you probably can live with $1 a day if you grow veggies in your garden :)

Posted on April 2, 2009 at 1:20 am Rice and noodle dishes are very cheap, even with a sprinkling of beef.  It's still very affordable.
