Do You Use Layaway?

When I was growing up, my mom would use layaway for Christmas gifts.  Once I got older, she let me pick out gifts for myself and my brothers and those items would go onto layaway.  That way we could pay for the items over time, since we didn't have credit cards. The store took the items and kept them on reserve or layaway as we made small monthly payments. Often, I use layaway to ensure that I get the items I want without using a credit card.  The layaway purchase encourages me to save money and make regular payments and practice money management. Does layaway help you get the items you want while staying within your monthly budget? Do you ever use layaway?

Most stores do not offer layway anymore. The only store in my area that I know still does is Kmart.

Some local shops offer the layaway service, but you have to ask.  They don't simply advertise the layaway service.  Just say, "Do you have layaway?" Nothing to lose.

There are some stores with lay-away plans and I am thinking of trying it.

I have NEVER used Layaway, although it sounds like a great idea! I wish I could do that with a lot of things I buy - so that I wouldn't be spending such a big chunk in one sitting, but a lot of stores just DON'T offer Layaway. I hear K-Mart does now, but, lol, I don't shop there very often to begin with, so it probably doesn't matter. Does it require a credit check? (not sure why it would - but I'd be worried about it if it did!)

I used to use layaway at walmart for christmas, but all the walmarts around here dont do that anymore. The only place loca that does that now is kmart & i think they are more expensive so now i just save up for christmas & i start shopping early.

I have not used Layaway in a long time.  I used to use it on stuff at Kmart and Walmart a lot several years ago.  I know Walmart stopped doing it and I think Kmart only does it at Christmas now.  I have never used layaway anywhere else.

I know where I live at there is no where that offers layaway anymore. I wish they still offered that service but they do not. I did hear that some stores during Chirstmas time were bringing it back only for that. Me I guess if I cannot buy something right than and there than I guess I do not get it. If they brought layaway back I think it would be great. Nice discussion.

My mom always used to use layaway when I was younger for my school clothes. I haven't used it since then, but I always think about it. Do you know if layaway helps build credit at all? Do you know if it works on sale items?

Since gift cards are so popular now there is no need for layaway anymore. Our Walmart where I live stopped doing layaways about 2 years ago. It's just as easy to put money away on a gift card every month and when you are ready to buy, just get what you wanted in the first place. I love using gift cards.
