I'd like to see students taught about credit, how to manage it, budgeting and other financial matters
much earlier than college, actually. I think a return to basics (including Home Economics classes) might be of serious benefit to the younger generation. However, I do agree that college students are really targets for the credit card companies. They have all these increased expenses, while pursuing their education, some are living away from home for the first time, etc. I know there are college campuses where credit card companies set up booths in common areas in the early days of the semester and offer incentive gifts and such for students that sign up for cards. A lot of them are simply
not ready for that level of responsibility. My daughter is in community college (
lives at home and commutes each day) and she says she is constantly surprised by her classmates who are shocked at the cost of living away from their parents. One girl said she never realized how much it cost to buy toothpaste, deodorant, all her hygiene items and even cleaning supplies that Mommy and Daddy always paid for ;) These kids would be well-served by a good financial education LONG before credit cards, loans and the like are even possible for them.

I think educating student is not enough. They have to decide from themselves what is right to do and what is not. No matter how you educate them and iof they really want to get credit card there's nothing you can do about it. There are a lot of students who get credit card not because they need it for emergency purposes but they just want to use it for shopping. Well, you know, there's temptation everywhere.
