Gardening To Save Money

I've seen so many people say that growing your own vegetables won't save you money - but it DOES. I don't have a big yard but I do have a balcony and a small patio. The small amount of yard I have are for my dogs to run in. So I have many vegetables growing in pots on my balcony and under the patio. I also put some trellis against my fence line and grow vegetables that will climb up these which makes more room. I have strawberries growing in hanging pots around my patio. I have tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, zucchini, pumpkin, peas, beans, corn, cabbage, radish, broccoli, spinach, garlic, mint, chives, coriander, rockmelon, honeydew melon and eggplant growing in such a small space. I always have so many vegetables that I can make entire stir-fry dinners from my own garden without needing to go to the store. I can also make soups from veges out of my garden. We eat healthy food, it gets us outside and it really saves me so much money. The seeds cost nothing - just save seeds from the veges you eat and plant them again and again. To save even more money, I swap things with neighbors. She has chickens, so I take over veges and she gives me eggs in return.

I dont have acess to all that  I do garden each season for my family. we have a very short growing season here. I love the fresh food my family grows but its just for a short time not all year long. I don't have anyone near that I can trade vegitables to for other things.

I too love gardening and the idea of growing your own vegetables is very tempting . I used to live in a house with garden where i had a little vegetable garden where i grew green chillies, spinach, tomatoes, curry leaves and greens..it was wonderful. Then we moved to an apartment where i am not able to grow anything much as i do not have enough space and convenience to do so. I have mint leaves in a container and a tomatoes plant..i know it does help a lot in saving money when you are able to grow your own vegetables besides being healthy as we take care about what we feed the plants..

I love the idea of gardening and as I mentioned, I definitely plan on having a garden this year.  It is not yet warm enough in our climate to begin gardening as we just lost the last of our snow. I love what you have planted in your garden, fresh fruit and vegetables are definitely the best.  I plan on freezing my produce this year.  I want to plant cucumbers, beans, leaf lettuce, radishes, strawberries, and melon.  The list could go on.  Last year, I had just a small space for a garden, but this year I am going to make it larger. Not only is a garden good for reducing the grocery bill, it is also a great hobby.  I love being outside working and weeding in the garden and taking thrill that in that the garden is growing...it's almost like having a baby...you are in awe of the way it grows and matures.

I don't have a lot of room for gardening but I do grow fresh tomatoes, herbs, bananas and limes.  I find that herbs are expensive and when you grow them yourself they make everything else taste so nice and fresh.

You are right! Produce is very expensive, and seeds are so cheap. Even if you only get one piece of produce from each plant, you still are saving money! I have a very small space too, I do not have a porch or a yard, I live in a very small apartment, but I have still planted strawberries which I have on a shelf high up (so the plants can hang when they grow a bit more) Cucumbers, parsley, flowers, 2 kinds of basil, jalepenos, cat grass (clearly for my cat) and a venus fly trap. Even if I only get a couple pieces of fruit/vegetables/herbs, I will still be happy that I saved money and I grew them myself. I have always had a green thumb, so I think that I can make these things work! What other things grow well in pots? I clearly can only do things in pots because I have such a small space and no yard. I have no porch either, so I need to find things that grow well indoors. I think I am going to invest in a UV lamp just to help these thngs grow.

It's a nice and profitable hobby. You can also plant some medicinal herb to use it as a natural remedies if any member of your family get sick, it's very useful.
