I wouldn't let someone harass me on the phone though debt collectors use that as a scare tactic so debtors will pay their debts immediately.

That would be really good if they does not call back. Mostly collection agents treat the debtor like their slave who has to listen to them and should do what ever they say.

One very important thing that you should always remember = DEBT IS NOT A CRIME!

Get their name and number, the time they called and log it.  No one has the right to harass you because of your debt.  In no way does doing your job mean that you have the right to harass someone.  Their job is to merely find out when you might make a payment and record it on your file stating that you were contacted and when you plan on making a payment.

Valid, agreed, harassment IS a crime and it's also just not decent.  However, I have learned through my 2 years as a collector that the word "harassment" is thrown around way, way too often.  If a collector calls you once a week and every week you tell them to screw off, they will get pushy.  My job is not to "merely inform" people that they owe a debt.  My job is to collect that debt.  When I talk to a debtor 4 times in one month and each time he tells me to go to hell, and he owes a large debt, its my job to avoid suit with that person.  The only way to avoid suit on a high balance account is to make at least partial payment.  The collection agency doesn't want to go to court.  Its expensive, it takes a really long time to litigate, and did I mention its expensive?  No one in their right mind would rather just go through litigation than work out a long payment plan.  It doesn't make sense when I try to explain this to a debtor and their response is "sue me, go to hell".  I have to get pushy to explain to these people that it is in their best interest to follow my suggestions.  I want to work with people, I don't want to have to raise my voice to drown out the profanities on the other end of the line.  So take that into account before you go throwing around terms like harassment its a very serious offense.  We are well within our limits to call a maximum of once a day and to raise our voice to get a point across without overstepping a professional boundary.IF a collector swears at you, impersonates a police officer, leaves you multiple messages per day on the SAME phone number, those are examples of harassment offenses.  Rarely do collectors cross these lines.  Not only is it illegal, but almost every agency watches their collectors like hawks to make sure they are not violating the FDCPA or common decency guidelines.Thank you.
