Those are really great ideas. I've been through some pretty hard financial times and it seems hopeless to be able to save money. During those times, I try to do the best that I can to paybills and try not to be too stressed over not saving money. Perhaps the family income declines or expenses increase, but either way savings start to dwindle. During those times, I cut expenses to the bare minimum and expect full cooperation from every member of my household. Everyone has to do their part. And, when the financial crisis is passed, we can relax a little bit and have a few enjoyable perks. But, i do try to make sure that family members each have something that is enjoyable so they don't feel too deprived. Thanks so much for your thoughtful article. Very thorough and much appreciated.

I suppose anything is possible if you put your mind to it, however, if only one partner is working and they are earning a basic salary, this does not really work.

What a well thought out and useful plan. Thank you so very much. I have been in situations where I was in so much debt that I thought it was impossible to save. I lived by robbing Peter to pay Paul as the old saying goes. I wish I had your insights then. For those of you who have never been there don't go, it's horrible. Now I am debt free but still scared to death of being that indebted and poor again. Try to save something every single week, if it's only $5. Get in the habit of saving and you will have peace of mind even in these troubled times.
