Instead where the signature is, write "see ID." This way no one can steal your card and know how to forge your signature! And they will need ID to prove they are the owner of the card. I lost my debit card and the back was signed because the post office will only accept signed cards. Well the person made charges on my card AND forged my signature (I have changed my signature since then), so I was not able to get the money back that they spent, and it was only 1 day from the time I lost my card to the time I reported it. I was out $70! For some that may not be much but I am sure some of you know that can be a lot when you don't have a lot. So! Now with my new card I do not sign them, I write "see ID" so they cannot make a fake signature on the card, AND I always bring cash to the post office because they will only take cards that are signed and I refuse to sign mine!

Hopefully you have a government ID that has a signature if the store owner requires a signature match.

That sounds like a reasonable idea. However, I work in retail and we don't accept cards that don't have a signature on them so you may run into problems.

Most places now have the customer swipe and rarely do they check for signatures anymore.

I know it's mainly chip and pin now but a card should still be signed

i like to put 'see ID' since people can just copy the signature off the back if it's there...just be careful of your cards!

I never sign my credit cards, but now alot of people dont even pay attention & they swipe your card without even asking for you id. I always tell them about it. Make sure you pay attention to that because what if someone did steal your card: they would be getting away with it.

I agree. everyone I know writes see i.d. on the back of there cards. I do to. I don't want someone seeing my signature if they get my card.

I have never had anyone but the post office (because they are a government agency) refuse an unsigned card, so long as I had photo ID with signature. Rarely does a retailer ask to see ID to compare signatures as they should. But if someone uses your card without authorization and the store swipes it without signature, and the signature on their receipt is not yours, you can dispute this charge. I have changed my signature but apparently my old signature was very easy to copy off the back of my card that was stolen. The bank even sent me a copy of the signature that was on the receipt of the disputed charge. Of course, I could see a difference, but it was pretty close, and since I did not have the time or money to take it to court over $70, I ended up losing that money.
