A recent news story says that children and babies are the newest group of identity theft victims. Often their identity is stolen from a local day care or pediatricians office or even stolen by the parent or grandparent. The theives go out and open credit card accounts or obtain jobs and then don't pay taxes. Have you heard about this? What steps can a concerned parent take to ensure their child's good credit future?

This is an extremely scary situtaion. Especially for parents. Can you imagine being six years old and already having ruined credit. There should really be better safe guards. I mean don't credit reports actually list the person's age? How is it that creditors are missing the fact that someone has stolen a baby's identity fraudulently. Hope this situation resolves. Thanks for your reply.

I don't get it. Don't you have to be 18 to apply for credit-related things?

The victim is the child or baby, not the perpetrator. Usually the identity theft happens when a person steals a baby or child's personal information such as social security number and then fraudulently represents themselves to be that person and opens credit card accounts using their spotless credit history. Personally, I can't understand how they get away with it. But, apparently, it's a new and growing field of identity theft victims.

Oh my God ... I don't think this actually happens. It's just crazy. But it's a smart move from the thieves. It's true. What exactly should I do to save my babies reputation. If they can easily get my child information from the day care, so it's better to stay at home forever till the age of 18. Then he/she can spoil there credit by their own. Thanks for sharing such a thing.

There are many wicked people in the world these days. And, simply because we wouldn't do such evil things ourselves, doesn't mean that others would not do them. Thanks for everyone's comments. If you have a child or baby, you can start by protecting their personal identifiable information such as social security number. Do not give that out to anyone, unless forced to do so. Day care workers don't need that info.Your doctor doesn't need that info. If you are asked to produce it, then protest. Be cautious when sending off your tax return by mail as theives can easily intercept your mail at your mail box and inspect your personal documents. Drive to the post office and hand the item to your postal worker so that you can be sure it is in safe hands.

That's the best strategy. You wouldn't think that people would be capable of such cruelty, but they are. When it comes to protecting your own identity or your child's identity, you can't be too careful.

There are people that steal the identities for people that have passed away. why couldn't they steal the name from a child. I think that is really aweful. We used to get a socail number later after kids where grown a bit but now you get them at birth I supose there is a way for people to steal that and use it.
