I don't think its essential to have a credit card. In today's economy I would say cut the thing up and move on. If you don't have the cash you probably don't need it anyway.

They are not essential but can be very useful in getting rebates and refunds or discounts for items. However, it ts tempting, very tempting, to spend like mad with that card.

Credit cards are not essential, though some companies may want a credit card number to ensure payment. It has happened to me. My new motto going forward is..if they want a credit card number than they don't want my business. If you are looking to build credit...you have your monthly bills to look at: heating, electricity, etc..If those are paid in a timely manner (on time), you will have a good credit rating. Credit cards serve no purpose other than to make money for the companies where they come from. As someone already mentioned...they just add to your burden of debt.

Paying your bills on time and keeping up with your payments is more essential for good credit. Defaulting on student loans and credit cards can adversely affect your credit score and reduce the chances of getting a loan or mortgage when you really need it.

I don't think it is essential. Since most of us are here because we owe debt, many of us are forgetting that it can be a very good tool. If you have self control to only use the card but pay back what you charge immediately, then it will help your credit score rather than hurt it. It is also a good emergency tool if something happens and you do not have the cash of your own to handle business, such as getting a plane ticket to visit a family member that has fallen sick or died, or if you get in a car accident, or if you or one of your family becomes ill and needs emergency medication or procedures.

Very true! And, well said. Most of us do forget that there is an upside to credit. When used judiciously, credit cards can serve as a backup for emergency situations that would go unpaid or unattended. For instance, if a person doesn't have health insurance, they might not be able to visit the doctor or emergency room in case of health problems. Credit cards can easily cover that expense. There are many other options depending on your local state worth investigating.

I don't necessarily think it is essential, but I will admit I feel more comfortable always having one with me. What if something would happen and I need money fast?

well it depends. They are useful as long as you keep track of what you are spending on and avoid impulses. I have known people who go on a shopping spree and then cry over their huge bills.
