I had a recent scare in which I thought my identity must have been stolen!I was filling out an online application for a Capital One Online Savings Account. I have previously had a Money Market Savings Account there, but those rates have declined to where a regular savings account produces a higher yield. So, I switched! However, while filling out the form, I was asked 'Your credit report indicates that you opened a mortgage in 2006, whom was your creditor?' I don't, nor did I ever, have a mortgage! I was terrified out of my mind! I chatted up the 'Chat Now' people there to help you, and got a reply stating that the 'none of the above' option is used when this scenario comes up.Does anyone else out there think there should be a better way to verify who I am? They could, I dont know, NOT tell me that something which doesn't exist is on my credit report. Just a thought.

Yea i would agree that there should be a better way. I don't really have to deal with that because of the company I have that represents me in identity theft and legal situations. What did you end up telling them? If you want I could send you the info about the company that protects my family. Whateever you do I hope all turns out well and your family is good. Idt is probably the worse crime right now, but probably the easiest for criminals not to get caught. You take care and let me know if i can assist you. La Broi Walton keyingsuccess.com

Be careful who you share your financial information with, i.e. account numbers, passwords, etc...I had a checking account which was in my name only. No other names on the account. My husband at the time, took my check book wrote a check and signed his name on the bottom. I cancelled the check immediately, but I was the one that ended up paying for the "cancelled check" at the liquor store where he wrote the check. It's similar to child abuse/abduction....it's usually somebody you know.

That's interesting! And, I'm glad that you brought it up. When I applied with that company online a few years back, they told me that another account (mortgage) had been opened in my name. I've never owned a home, so I was worried that someone might have tampered with my identity. But, it's possible that it's just a scenario they make up. Good to know.

Verify with the company and ask them to double-check if it really is you. Many reported cases of identity thefts are actually scares and false alarms.
