I know these types of situations can be very frustrating. And, I wish that I had some advice that could clear up this situation for you. And, yes, it's unfair that they would do this to you, when you were trying to pay them in good faith. In cases where you are attempting repayment, be sure to get an agreement in writing from the company as a backup. That way they can't do something like this to you in the future. If you feel that they are doing something illegal, you could report the company to the BBB or the state attorney general. Those people are always looking for evil-doers to prosecute. It's possible that this company is just trying to scare you into coughing up money you don't owe or can't possibly pay. Best of luck with the situation. I'm sure there will be many other great suggestions.

If you are like me and record the dates and time you call (I usually just jot it down directly on the bill as I call them), then that could serve as evidence that you called and attempted to pay. Their phone records should also have that, maybe if it comes to that point you can contact your own telephone company and have them send you records so you can point out the times when you called their customer service number (usually phone records are able to be detailed as much as to say the length of the call, which may also help). Does the 1100.00 correlate with the payments you sent in during the time they said you had no account? If so, then there is not much you can do in the way of disputing the amount itself. However, if the payments have not been applied to your account, since you can prove that the checks you were writing were being cashed, I think that serves as substantial evidence that they are either very confused, lying to you, or doing something illegal. There is no way they could cash your checks if they were not associated to an account. They may have even been applying it to someone else's account who has the same or a similar name or account number to yours. If you were writing your account number on the checks that works in your favor. I would bring up all these points to the company directly, and if they are unwilling to work with you then bring it up to the collections office (the attorney that sent you the letter), and tell them first of all that you do not have that amount available, second that you require to know where your payments were being applied to during the time you had "no account" before giving them more money, and if they can produce this evidence then you can work out a payment plan with them. Remember the total amount due is never the ONLY option, it is just the preferred option so they make it seem like the only one.

Be prepared with all the documents you have and the best would be to clear the matter as soon as possible because they seems to be very irresponsible.
