Poor stewardship of personal data by organizations, resulting in unauthorized access to sensitive data, can expose individuals to the risk of identity theft. The Privacy Rights Clearinghouse has documented over 900 individual data breaches by US companies and government agencies since January 2005, which together have involved over 200 million total records containing sensitive personal information, many containing social security numbers.

Identity protection is a thing of the past. Unless you have never given your social security/insurance number to anyone, you are open for identity theft. As an insurance agent, I have access to a lot of information about my clients and it is because of their SS#. They can't get around giving it to me because the insurance company won't issue a policy without it. For the non-believers, read the Patriot Act and you'll see why.

Your best line of defense to protect your identity is to look at your credit report quarterly. Yep, four times a year. It's a pain in the a** but it is the best picture of your identity in existence.

By the way, one of our clients was the victim of identity mixup and not identity theft. His son is a Jr and it seems Jr has been less than honorable in his behavior. Unfortunately for our client, all of the bad behavior was put on his credit history. Now, he is spending thousands of dollars to get it straightened out. Jr, by the way, is serving time in the state prison so you can guess some of the info on his dad's credit history.

So I guess the point is you don't have to be the victim of identity theft to be in a bucket of crap. Until someone invents a fool proof method, we all face the potential of trouble.

Sandalwood is right in what he is saying, but i would like to tell you that you don't have to check your credit report 4 times a year and take points off your credit nowadays.

I have heard of certain organizations that claim to take care of your identity and such but instead steal and assume it for malicious purposes. So, my point is that you should be careful about choosing a proper identity protection company.

Yea, you do have watch out for such companies.  I'm pretty confident in my company though.  I'm pretty sure they wouldn't invite such thieves on the NYSE.
