There's no collection, yet. But my spouse has racked up over $30,000 in personal credit card debt. The cards are in my spouse's name. The debt has been used to keep a business alive. Am I liable for that debt?

You should check the laws in your area. In my state, we would both be responsible because we are married.

I'm not sure about this specific circumstance or your state laws. But in a similar situation where an ex-spouse is trying to get additional child support from a spouse. The new spouse's money might be exposed, assuming that it's in the same bank account as there is no way to tell what money belongs to whom. Guess what I'm trying to say is that you might consider moving your own personal money, investments and income into seperate accounts that are not accessible by your spouse so that creditors cannot claim that the money is his. Best of luck with the situation.

The debt that I incurred while married to my husband was my debt, as it was in my name and only my name. He came out clean and I have a bankruptcy on my credit report. I honestly don't think it is going to be on your credit report. IF you apply for credit together, and you are denied, you will be denied because it was on his report and not yours. So...yes it will be a contributing factor if you can obtain credit.
