Gas Tips?

I got an email with some tips on saving money on gas. I'd be curious to know what others think about them. One was to not "top up" your tank when the automatic shut-off happens. The email said you're basically just putting more gas into the hose for the next customer. Another suggested that buying gas in the early morning when it's cooler meant that since you're buying by volume and gas contracts at cooler temperatures, you'd actually be getting more. And another said that if you see the gas tanker truck delivering fuel to a station, there's probably sediment being stirred up in the underground tank, and you may want to avoid getting gas at that station right after a delivery. I think they make sense, but we have to take some of these emails with a grain of salt. What do you think?

Not getting gas when they are refilling the tank is an absolute truth because the sediment does get stirred up just as you should never let your tank on your car get much lower than a quarter tank for the same reason. This is to protect your car however, not save gas. Refueling in the early morning holds no truth as I understand it especially since most tanks are underground now and not really affected by temperature variances. Not sure if fuel is left in the line when you top off any more than it would at any other point though I do know fuel continues to run as long as you continue to pump. Best way to save gas is don't drive as much and when you do drive stay off the accelerator. Driving during low traffic hours is also helpful.

Thanks for the input. I think in these times, it's definitely worth a discussion. Every little bit of saving money helps in the long run.

The only way to really save gas is keep your car in good mechanical condition, drive conservatively and avoid high traffic times with stop and go traffic. Carpool or don't drive at all.

And that is the bottom line. This gas crisis has no real way of conserving gas other than not driving at all.

I don't know where you live but if you have public transportation, use it. If not, carpool. If you can't carpool, make as few trips as possible. This will mean consolidating trips and maybe even foregoing a trip.Other than that, keeping your car in good mechanical condition is the only alternative. Cars aren't built to get great gas mileage. I was emailed a youtube site showing a car that runs on air. Go to: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztFDqcu8oJ4&feature=related and watch it for yourself. I think they are on to something. The technology exists for the complete elimination of gas as a fuel. It simply has to be mass produced.

These may be obvious, but these are some more tips I've heard lately.Make sure to keep your tires aired up and don't drive over 65 mph.  Has anyone else heard the 65 mph thing.  I've tried to do it but when the limit is 70 everyone is passing you up!
