I was researching a few sites and reading some things about debt and debt collectors and they can actually call your employer and talke with them about garnishing your wages with a judges signature. That floored me. I meam if you find yourself in some serious debt then I can see how that is possible. But I only thought that was for like student loans and or hospital bills.

I don't think they can do that without a hearing. Pretty sure they have to bring suit against you and get a judgement before they can garnish. Anyone disagree ?

With rules like this, I'm mighty glad I live in Australia right now. This definitely isn't done out here. The creditor is able to make payment arrangements even with the debt collectors. As long as arrangments have been made, foreclosure (and repossession) is held off.

I also have heard that, I am not shocked. They'll do anything for money, even if it is not right in ethics. Though I do believe in some states it is illegal to do that. I say check out your local state laws to find out more.

That is really apalling, though not the least bit suprising.

That would be so embarrassing for someone to call your employee and tell them you aren't paying your bills. But I believe they would do it if they could.

I have only heard about that with things like unemploymet. In some states if you are overpayed they do not let you just not get benefits they require you to pay it back and can garnish your wages. But even in that case I thought you were suppose to receive some kind of notice in advance.

A creditor can not call your place of employment and discuss it with anyone - that would be releasing information to a 3rd party. However, they can call your place of employment to simply verify employment. They cannot discuss any details with them though. Once the court grants the garnishment, you have a chance to fill out the income papers and mail back to them and they will send something to your employer to have the garnishment started.

Your wages can be garnished for child support. I don't know of any other bills that can collect via garnishing, but I am sure it can happen. You can not declare bankruptcy on child support or student loans...reasons are just obvious.

Your wages can be garnished for any bill as long as it is granted through the courts (atleast that's how it is in the States).
