How do you stick to it when you are trying to save up a certain amount of money.  I always seem to break into the "stash" and blow it. :(

I keep a reminder-board above my desk in my home study. It's a pin-board and I stick images of the things I'm saving for on it to remind me why I'm doing this. I often have days where I just want to blow the stash and go shopping, or I think maybe I'll put off that bill. But then I force myself to look at my reminder-board and tell myself that my goals are more important than a quick-fix now. Find something that motivates you. Put it somewhere you can see it. Then look at it regularly to remind you why you're saving.

I just roll my spare change that I collect and deposit it in my bank account, but I have friends who use that for a specific purchase, or for part of it in the case of more expensive things. I guess it's relatively easy to just sock the coins away, as long as you don't stray from the plan.

When it comes to saving, I have to really really want it. If  I really want something saving isn't going to be hard at all.

For us it's pretty simple. The things we're saving for are eye glasses, tires, dental work, HSA  (health savings account) and clothes in that order. We've prioritized our needs and have to stick to it in order to be able to make the purchases. We live on a pretty strict budget. If there's anything left over at the end of the week, it goes toward the first priority on the list.

I am able to ge the necessary things paid.  But I am having issues with frivolous type things.  Well not really friv, but I want a bike that runs on a battery to help me save on gas and keep from depending on the car.  However, seems like I just keep on blowing my cash whenever somebody in the family needs this or that!  ARRRG!   Thanks for the tips.  I took a gallon just and wrapped it in duct tape... I'm making deposits.  Let's see how long that lasts :o

I personally use glass jars with stickers on them, what I am saving for. I think it's a fairly good idea, because when the jar gets full, I put that amount into my savings account, generally, and then write down in my notebook how much I have got saved for that appliance, and don't touch it! It does take a bit of will power although I think that it is definately well worth it in the long run. Just try to stay focused, with pictures, stickers, something exciting to make you want to save more and more!

I might take a picture of what I'm saving for- and post it around the house and work.  I also take the money and put it into my savings account- Out of sight out of mind.

If you are scaing for something that you really want, then the actually saving part should not be that hard.

It is possible that we tend to get such feelings. My way is of giving the money to my best friend and asking him to return the money only after the specified time period.
