Why pay a company to negotiate this for you when you could probably do the negotiation yourself?

Paying the full amount on a very old debt may not be the best solution. Chances are, the original debt holder has sold the debt to a collection company and written off the debt as a loss. So basically they got their money back. If you pay the entire debt, you are not paying to the company you owe, but to a debt company. I'm not saying that you shouldn't pay. Just be prepared to negotiate.

If its an old debt you could get it off your books by negotiating a payment susually they offer about half. It might not help your credit totally. Its up to you. Do a little chekcing on the debt you want ot pay first.

I have an old debt with a credit card company and it has grown to a huge amount that I don't think I will be able to settle. They are still after me but right now I don't have money to settle it.

You would end up paying for the additional amount for these " professional services" again.. and ...... making your lump sum a heavier sum

Seeking professional help for the lump sum payment of your credit card debt is another sales talk. You can negotiate by yourself directly through the creditors.

There are probably lots of bureaucratic terms and conditions that can trick us. Specialists are trained and experience in dealing with such situation in many institutes. For that reason it is sometimes wise to let the professional handle it.
