KG101 - I actually did debt settlement myself. I successfully reduced my credit card debt from $212,000 to $30,000 in about six months and had over $100,000 in debt written-off.  While this did affect my credit score it was not horrible.  It fell from the mid-700's to just over 600.  I freed myself from $3600 a month in interest payments and because I closed my settled accounts, have learned to stop living on credit cards entirely.

CHNfly - That is a good idea .
V.M. (Guest) - DO YOUR RESEARCH before attempting debt settlement. It may not be the wonderful idea you think it is.

In regard to debt counseling costing money, there are organizations that will provide financial counseling for free, e.g. Crown Financial. You can look it up online. Whether they report to credit agencies or not, I'm not sure, but it sure beats paying for the same kind of service.

- I was thinking about debt consolidation thing but we are considering the amount rate given is lower than the interest of the existing loan. It doesn't have to be long term paying, but as long as the interest is lowered, we will live to that.
- Great article .

debt-consolidationss (Guest) - Hi,

shruthi - thanks for the valuable tips.
- thank for all information
rebelmel - I definitely used to ignore my debt, and I ran from it, for a few years. It never went away, and I never won the lottery like I hoped, so now at the age of 24 I can't get any credit cards or take out loans. I wish that I had tried to set up payment plans when I was a lot younger for the things I was in debt for. I owe so much at this point I am not even sure where to begin with chipping away with my debt.
beautyqueen26 - Ignoring your current debt is never the solution. That would be about as dumb as not paying your mortgage payment and then wondering why your house was reposessed by the bank.
These things have a tendancy to come back and bite you.

You have to get serious about debt reduction.  First, stop spending money on the credit cards.

They are not a free ride!
-   doing nothing--those who are in excess of fear of their debt ,are keeping themselves idle and  get into the trouble
- It's pretty much don't let your credit eat you up.
Manage and handle your debts well and not let them eat you!
- Thanks for all the information.  I have gone through a bankruptcy before and let me tell you, about 6 months after the discharge of my bankruptcy every credit card company offered me credit.  It is extremely easy to get back into the credit trap all over again.  I learned the hard way.  My new motto is "I got myself in this mess, I (alone) will get myself out of it".  I have been having an extremely difficult time trying to make ends me, however my debt is s-l-o-w-l-y going away.
v._.b - Credit cards have made budget management difficult. Most people just spent through credit cards keeping in mind the next months income. But by the time it arrives, credits are about to exceed it. It causes stress and finally they end up cutting on their essentials. If you too are one of them, start using Debit cards only- no matter how many points or discounts you get on credit cards.
sheekaka (Guest) - The best advice I can give to anyone deep in debt is to call a local bankruptcy attorney and ask for a consultation. If you have a referral from someone you trust, this is great. I made the difficult call and was lucky to get a decent local lawyer who reviewed my situation, explained the pros and cons and gave me his opinion of my best approach based on the laws. This initial consult was free and while you may be thinking the lawyer is hustling me for a chunk of change, I have to say that I have his name, address and location rather than a telemarketing debt relief company and he can be disbarred for misrepresenting his clients.  Do your homework. I have heard horror stories about debt relief companies leaving people high and dry with bad credit and paying a lawyer to do this right was an insurance policy that took the guess work out of legal fresh start.
David (Guest) - I really enjoyed looking through the post and found it as an informative one.The facts of debt negotiation and debt settlement are described clearly. In fact I learned from this post that debt settlement can keep you away from filing for bankruptcy. You can also restructure your finances according to your convenience. It is a way to pay off debts faster. Debt settlement companies negotiate credit card debt settlement or other bills and reduce your debt amount.
buggles (Guest) - I have read and agree that if you consult and inlist the help of a credit counseling company, it is just as bad as filing for bankruptcy.  I am learning to manage my money better, especially now that I do not have a reliable source of income.  I did not get into debt overnight, it was a gradual process (I'm not discussing my student loans)   I have always prided myself on paying my bills and paying them on time; however, unforseen obstacles led me to believe that credit cards were my only solution.  I have one bankruptcy on my credit report and I don't intend to make it worse by adding "credit counseling."
KL (Guest) - You don't solve money problems with money...You solve money problems with management....Prepare yourself a budget & stick to it, no matter what. Make yourself  THINK SAVINGS AND STOP CHARGING! Most programs that advertise to help you out of debt such as settlement companies are rip-offs and scams! They are out there to make money. You only pay them to get further in debt by paying their fees and further damage your credit. I had to learn the hard way so please learn from my mistake. If you're really serious about getting out of debt you can do it yourself. Don't be a sucker!
HelpMePayOffMyDebt - Doing nothing is the worse thing by far!

If you do nothing you accept that you will always owe other people everything you own.  That is not the best way to go through life my friends...
Carolyn - Some good advice here. The problem for many people with some of the methods, ie debt consolidation is that old habits die hard. I know, our family have a terrible tendancy to max ou any creit card we have. In an ideal world I would like to get rid of both of my credit cards, adn never have to have one ever again.

I know I have not been disciplined enough in the past to pay the card off every month - I don't know when we might be able to do that month after month. And now Christmas is coming!!!
tbates - People are a creature of habit, and get comfortable with their direction and are uncomfortable with change. When your faced with mounting debt, and no money left at the end of the month you have heavy decisions to make. These decisions should be well thought out, and calculated. Don't rush into anything, take your time, don't let anybody push you into anything.

Heck even do some shopping around. "OOPS, if your reading this and have mounted Credit Card Debt you have probably already shopped around. If you want to keep paying interest on the accounts and seeing nothing change on your amounts owed do what you have been doing. And you will keep getting nowhere and letting the banks control your finances and future.

Ask yourself these three questions then weigh the risk of debt settlement:

1. If you lost your job today and had no money on hand where would you get money to feed or house your family?

2. If you lost a loved one after loosing your house and job how would you provide for your other family members?

3. If your family lost you today, and had no money saved, how would they continue?

They money your wasting now on unsecured debt, stretching to get by can and in most cases will impact your entire family at some point. The decision to take control and rebuild is a decision only you can make. The risk is far less than doing what your doing.

Below are key factors in choosing a debt settlement company to assist are listed below.

* Does the Debt Settlement Company you are considering report to any of the three major credit bureaus about your enrollment in their program?

* Does the debt settlement company you are considering have IAPDA certified debt arbitrators? IAPDA certified debt arbitrators possess a solid understanding of the laws governing the Debt Settlement industry and fully understand your current financial situation.

* Does the company offer any type of service guarantee? If so, what is the guarantee? If a company can not get settlement on your debt, you should never have to pay a fee, or the fee should be fully refunded.

* Does the debt settlement company you are considering belong to the United States Chamber of Commerce? If so, is the Chamber an accredited member of the Chamber of Commerce of the Unites States?

* Is the debt settlement company you are considering a member of the Better Business Bureau? If they do not advertise this, you can always inquire with the BBB first.

Knowing the risk of doing nothing, your risk in debt settlement can will be different for every person. They can include collection calls "we can stop most all of them", You will get letters from the banks "you get them now" Your credit score will suffer "you don't have a credit report now" you have a debt report. Other risks could include an attorney telling to pay up. In most cases and attorney is not even involved, yet the collection letter comes on his letter head. Biggest risk of all is "YOU BEING IN CONTROL". That is a risk the banks don't like to take so they can and will settle with the right approach.

In order to lower the risk in debt settlement, be sure you have searched the BBB report, make sure the company you use is an active member of the United States Chamber Of Commerce and IAPDA Certified. This will increase your chances of reaching your desired goals.
