karenpayne - I really can't agree or disagree with any of these comments, as everyone's situation is different and subject to the bankruptcy laws relevant to the state and country you're are living in.

However, I'd just like to tell you this true "food for thought" story that happened to a friend of mine. She had been struggling financially for many years as a sole parent, with all the usual issues most of us have with money. She finally decided to file for bankruptcy as an easier solution (or so she thought) to her problems, rather than face a number of issues, one of which was an irresponsible adult daughter who kept bleeding my friend for money, and using the threat of cutting off access to her grandchildren if she didn't play ball.

So she did the deed, and was fairly pleased with the outcome until she applied for a passport to attend her other daughter's wedding which was being held in Fiji. You guessed it - not eligible for a passport! Of course she was devastated and the wedding went ahead without her.

Just think about other consequences if you decide to go down the bankruptcy road.
Scott Hanah (Guest) - Great comments, and very helpful article. I also found another resource for paying off debt . Check out the credit counselling society if you need more info in Canada!
Mike James (Guest) - Wow! You are wrong on so many levels. I was able to get credit after bankruptcy. In fact my credit score went up. The fact that you cant file bankruptcy again for 8 years make you the best credit prospect. Not to mention you have no debt so you will be able to pay the credit back.
DO NOT SELL YOUR STUFF! You can keep your house, car, clothing, jewelry, and other house hold items if you file bankruptcy.
The author of this blog needs to do his or her research before posting this poppycock.

- this is a good one, actually. but it is still something that most people will have to avoid, bt business can most of the time go out of hand especially during the hard times like what we are experiencing now. we would be lucky if we can even get about 50% of the value of our liquidated assets...

Cfrance - There are some great tips in this article. I don't know if mowing my neighbors lawn is going to keep someone out of bankruptcy. Alot of the tips are great.
- Thank you very much for that information. I am already some the things you have suggested like making extra money online. This is what I'm doing to get some extra cash.
- I agree with having to take up any part-time work to help earn something rather than nothing. I even sold my favorite car - seen as an asset? That was one asset I didnt like to part with. Supermarket trips have gone down drastically, and items purchased do not have fancy brand names anymore. It is not easy but you do learn to put on a smile on the face of it all.
- Thanks for the tips. Im dealing with the same right now. im losing my business little by little. and im thinking of a plan on how this will not happen.
Phillipa (Guest) - There's a woman on TV on a show called Til Debt Do Us Part named Gail who writes a great blog on debt (http://www.gailvazoxlade.com/blog). I've seen her ask people to double their incomes and they've done it. So why does it take a woman with a big mouth yelling at people to get them to do what makes sense to any monkey with a brain? I think it's because most people are like deer trapped in headlights. They don't know which direction to move in, so they stay put, and things get worse, and worse and worst.
