Down and out in debt

One of the most frustrating situations in which to find oneself is in debt with no place to turn.  And I mean, no place.  You cannot get loans because your credit score is in the gutter.  You cannot get out of debt because your income seemly does not allow you to make the extra payments necessary to unbury yourself.  And worse yet, no one you know will help you.  This is a common place for those who are overwhelmed by debt.  A place that has no friends.  A place that has seemly no hope or help.  Now, I know why people go into depression.  When you feel the pressure of finances closing in around you, it is easy to succumb to its forces.

 

That is where I found myself.  Due to a nasty, protracted divorce, I was at the bottom looking up.  I had no money in savings, no money in retirement.  My cash life policy I was forced to liquidate.  I also had to give over my favorite truck to the creditors.  Then, the final blow was bankruptcy.

 

But, even after that I felt caged and trapped because I had a sense of entitlement.  Someone should help me.  I’m a nice guy who, through his own actions, was caught up in a bitter divorce and all of the bad things that go along with it.  Now, I needed someone to step up and help me.  It never came.  As a matter of fact, it still has not come.  And it has been six years since the divorce was final.

 

Until I stopped being a victim and started to work my way out of the financial mess that I made, did I begin to see that, yes, I was to blame.  But I was determined not to sit by any longer and feel sorry for myself because those I knew would not give me any money.

 

I am better off today because of that.  I’m getting there financially, and I have a road map for success.  But it all began with this singular attitude change.

 

You must face this, too, if you are going to move beyond your circumstances.  This is a seminal decision in your life.  In order to have the strength and determination to move forward, you have to choose what you will be; victim or victor.  So, what’s it going to be?
