Previously this archipelago divided into several clumps:
1. Smit family
2. Rumpun Altai
3. Indo-German family
4. Austro-Asian family
- West: The first language, consists of 664 local languages.
- East: Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia.
Division based on the experts behasa including the names of the islands in the Indonesian region. Among them: J.R. Logan from the UK, Germany's Adolf Bastian.

Why was a Malay language? First, the language as a Lingua Franca (language market). Second, easily learned. Third, do not recognize levels. Fourth, flexibel (easy to adjust). Fifth, has spread to all over the country.
