There are several ways that your credit rating can be adversely affected. Many times the items being reported to your credit bureau may be inaccurate. To help consumers protect their credit bureau reports, the government has in place some laws that can help in disputing negative items and restoring a consumer’s good name. These laws are The FCRA and FACTA.

The FCRA is short for the Fair Credit Reporting Act. The FCRA protects consumers in the event erroneous information is place on their report by holding the credit agencies responsible for reporting accurate information. The FCRA put together in 1970 provides consumers with certain laws which include the ability to request a copy of you credit report, dispute negative items on your report, and notification if a removed item has been re-entered into a consumers report. The list I have provided is a few of many rights that a consumers has under The Fair Credit Reporting Act. To take advantage FCRA it is important to stay on top or your credit rating by monitoring your credit on a consistent basis.

FACTA also known as Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act holds credit organization responsible for the way a consumer’s information is handled. This law was put in place to curve the rise of identity theft. The guidelines set by FACTA ensure that certain documents such as personal information are shredded by any organization that handles sensitive personal information. FACTA also allows consumers the right to receive at least one free triple score per year. In some states like Georgia the limit is 2 free reports per year.

These two important acts were put in place to give consumers a course of action to take in the event their credit information is ever compromised. Surprisingly many people are not aware of these laws place in the books to protect them. Taking advantage of FCRA and FACTA is as simple as getting a free copy of your credit report. If you have been a victim of Identity fraud and or your are having trouble disputing items on your credit report, you may want to review these acts to understand your rights. Another option is to hire a reputable credit attorney to work in your favor to take advantage of your rights under the FCRA and FACTA.

Ignorance of the law is not an excuse, especially when the law was put in place to aid and assist you. To minimize your risk and maximize your safety, you should educate yourself on the benefits of the FCRA and FACTA. It is also a wise decision to keep some form of identity protection and credit monitoring service.

Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in America. The effects of identity theft can be a very hurtful experience that mostly occurs during the important moments of your life. Many victims of identity theft do not even realize that someone or in some cases several people have been violating them by getting access to their personal credit bureau report. Protecting your credit bureau report can easily be achieved by getting a copy of your free triple score from all three credit bureaus.

Your free triple score report will provide you with all the information you have reporting with all three credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax, and Trans Union. Once you have received your credit bureau report, it is crucial that you do a thorough investigation to make sure that all your information is reporting correctly. If you find that you have been a victim of identity fraud, the best thing to do in that situation is to seek professional legal help through a reputable credit attorney.

It is unfortunate if you find yourself dealing with the situation of having your identity stolen, but there several steps you can take to prevent identity theft before it happens. The first step is to arm yourself with identity protection. Many credit card companies offer identity protection through a small monthly fee on your credit card, but if you have several credit cards, you may want to consider getting a more universal identity protection policy. Getting a universal identity protection policy includes using a company that works hand in hand with the 3 credit bureaus to create a lock on your credit bureau report.

Once you've create a lock on your credit report, no one can make any purchases using your information without having to verify some very vital information. To secure yourself even further, it is important to shred all important personal information before disposing of them. Information that should be shredded is bank statements, credit card statements, and anything that shows your Social Security Number.

Another precaution you can take is to never give your Social Security Number over the internet through an unsecured server. One way to find out if the website you are viewing is insecure is by looking at your browser window. All secure internet websites start with https: and not just http:. To make it even safer to surf the internet, you should get virus protection, spyware and a reliable internet explorer like Firefox.

My last recommendation to protecting your free triple score report sounds simple enough, but a lot of people fall victim to it everyday; you should never give your Social Security Number over the telephone to a company you do not trust. Unless you have a long lasting relationship with a certain company, it is better to deal in person. If you must give sensitive information over the phone such as banking, try to establish a relationship with one particular individual in that department before you do so.

The is no way to avoid the issues of your credit score, one way or another your credit score report will become a topic of discussion. Whether you are making one of the two biggest purchases of your lifetime or you are applying for a job in the financial market, you will need to have good credit.

Good credit is something that is fairly easy to achieve but a little harder to maintain. Everyone starts with a good clean slate. Maintaining that clean credit however is difficult to stay on top of, especially during tough economic times. The good news is that if you find yourself falling behind on your credit, there are a few simple steps that you can follow to help raise credit score for the 3 credit bureaus.

The first thing your would need if you are trying to o raise your credit score is to get a free copy of your credit report. Any inaccuracies in your free report can affect your credit rating. A thorough investigation should include checking for accounts that are not yours, accounts that are reporting incorrectly, and even personal information such as addresses. your next steps should be taking some simple measures to raise credit scores with the 3 bureaus:

Pay Your Bills On Time:

It is easier said than done, but it is absolutely mandatory that you pay your bills on time, even if you only pay the minimum. Creditors mainly look at you current late payments in determining you credit worthiness, so if you have been late in the past, you can improve your rating by paying on time. Six months of steady payments can raise your score tremendously.

Lower Your High Limits:

The percentage of credit availability to credit balance can effect your credit score by as many as 100 points. You may be being on time but if all your credit cards are maxed out, a creditor assumes that you don’t have much money available to acquire new credit.

Do Not Close Unused Credit;

Do not close any credit cards or revolving credit accounts due to inactivity. You may not have any plans on using these cards, but if you close them, the good credit history will be removed from your account causing your credit score to drop. Older more established credit looks better than newer credit accounts.

Avoid Filing For Bankruptcy:

Filing for bankruptcy can elleviate you in some instances of all your debt, but the damages to your credit will remain for at least 7 years. Bankruptcies look especially bad because it shows that you chose not to pay your creditors at all.

Refrain From Making Unnecessary inquiries:

One inquiry can be responsible for bringing your credit down by 2 to 3 points. Although one inquiry will not be to adverse on your credit score report, several inquiries can add up and become the difference between being approved for a loan or not. If you notice any inquiries that you did not authorize, you can dispute these inquiries to help raise credit score points.

Raising your free triple score can easily be attributed to following these simple steps. To protect yourself, it is important to order a current copy of you free triple score credit report at least twice annually. To take it a one step further, you may choose to get identity protection or sign up to receive an updated copy of your report monthly.

If you find that you have an error on your report that you need to dispute, you can either do it yourself or hire a professional credit attorney. If you choose to handle repairing your credit yourself to save some money, you will have to know the process. You will need to collect all pertinent information regarding the erroneous post to your credit and write the credit bureaus and the collection agency.

First thing you will need to do is write a letter to the credit bureaus that have the negative listing on your report. You will need to specify exactly why you believe that the information on your credit bureau report is not valid. For example you will have to provide proof of whether the information is false, reported wrong or is fraudulent. If you can provide proof of your claims such as a receipt, old statement or a police report, you should include them in your correspondence.

The next people you should correspond with will be the actual creditor or collection agency that placed the negative item on you credit check report. When you write the creditors it is important that you have a copy your free triple score credit report with you so you can include all important information from your report to your letter. Your letter should ask your creditors to provide proof of your negative account with them. It is important that you send your letter certified mail to ensure that your correspondence is received. You must also make sure to keep copies of all your letters for future reference.

After your letters have been sent, the credit agency will investigate your claims and will respond back to you within 30 to 45 days. Your creditors or collection agencies will have 30 days to verify and provide proof that the negative item(s) on you credit are valid. If proof cannot be provide within that time period, then they will have to remove the negative item(s). This process can take several months of correspondence before it is resolved, but if you truly believe that the information on your report is incorrect, then it will be well worth it.

The process of re-establishing a damaged credit bureau report can be time consuming. That is the reason that I truly recommend that you give the utmost importance to protecting your credit rating.
