Guide to Choosing the Right Cell Phone Plan

 drummakidd's blog - Posted: 4/2/2009
Hey guys, this is drummakidd.  I've noticed that on the forums there have been a lot of questions about cell phones and affordable cell phone plans.  I work at a place that has cell phones so I know a bit about how to choose the right cell phone plan.  Also, some people prefer certain features on their cell phones, so that's another variable to cell phone plans.  Some customers want text messaging, internet, and different types of talk times.

First of all there are two different types of cell phone plans: Prepaid Plans and Postpaid (Contract) Plans.  First I'll talk about Prepaid Cell Phone plans.  Prepaid cell phones are beneficial because they don't require a credit check and don't require any type of contract so you won't be locked into a 1 or 2 year agreement.

There are many types of prepaid cell phone plans offered by Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile, Verizon, AT&T, Tracfone, and Net10 to name a few.  The ones I'm going to talk about however are Boost Mobile, AT&T, and Virgin Mobile.

PREPAID PHONES
Boost Mobile
Boost Mobile is currently offering three different prepaid plans.  Basic, $1/day chat plan, and monthly unlimited.
Basic - this plan includes freedom to pay by the minute or by the day.  It includes nationwide Boost walkie-talkie feature, and it's only $0.10.  This plan is great for users that just want a cell phone for emergencies and don't talk on the phone much.
$1/Day Chat Plan - includes Unlimited Text Plan, Unlimited Nights & Weekends, Unlimited Mobile-to-Mobile, and includes Low International Long Distance calls.
Monthly Unlimited - includes UNLIMITED everything for only $50 a month.  This means that you get Unlimited Talk, Text, and Web.  This is great for teenagers and people that want to use the full capabilities of a phone.  It also includes Unlimited Walkie-Talkie, Voicemail, low internation long distance calls, and includes the nationwide network.

One of the pros about Boost Mobile is that it is on the Sprint network so it has pretty good call reception and the cell phones all have bluetooth capability.

AT&T Go Phone
AT&T Go phone are probably the cheapest cell phones.  The price of one of these cell phones is about $14 however the cheapest cell phone barely has any features.  The Go Phones are part of the AT&T network and therefore have really good reception and not many dropped calls.  AT&T go phones have two different type of rate plans.
Pay as You Go $0.25/min - This plan is basically a simple plan where you pay $0.25 per minute for each minute you talk.  You have to purchase air time. You can purchase $15, $25, all the way up to $100.  You can also purchase data cards for text messaging and internet usage for about $9.  The advantage of the $100 air time is that it doesn't expire until after one year.  Whereas if you only pay $15 or $25 then your minutes expire after about a month and half.
Pay as You Go $1 a day - One of the advantages of this plan is that it only costs $1 plus $0.10 a minute for each day that you talk on the phone.  Another advantage is that this plan includes free mobile to mobile with other AT&T customers which is a great advantage for people that have friends or family members with AT&T members.

Virgin Mobile
Virgin Mobile offers the best phones for the best price.  Most of these phones are cheap and affordable and include camera phones.  Virgin Mobile's pitch to everyone is that they have very flexible plans to match everyone's needs. Depending on the plan you choose the talk time can be as low as $0.07 per minute.

POSTPAID PHONES
AT&T
AT&T advertisements say that AT&T has the least dropped calls nationwide and has a really good family plan.  There's not really much to say about AT&T because it is similar to other cell phone plans.

SPRINT
SPRINT has the fastest 3G network.  This means that it has the fastest internet speeds of all the other cell phone companies.

VERIZON
Verizon advertises that they have the largest nationwide network and that it's still expanding.

I hope this information helped you.  For more information feel free to leave some comments and I can answer them =)
