How Going Green Will Save Money On Your Household Bills

 Value! - Posted: 4/1/2009
If you have difficulty paying your household bills, you can save a lot of money by going green and following a more eco-friendly lifestyle.

Use energy saving lighting to save money on your electric bill. You will also use less energy and have less to pay on your fuel bills if you lower the temperature setting on your heating system by a few degrees.

Save money by wearing more layers of clothing indoors instead of using a heater. Dress in lighter clothes before you decide to turn on air conditioning, fans or cooling units.

Don't have a big refrigerator if you are not going to keep it well stocked. Empty fridges use more energy, so you save more money with a small fridge or by keeping a large one filled.

Never waste water. An electric kettle will use less power if you only boil enough water to cover the element.

If your water usage is measured by a meter you can reduce your water bill and save money by making sure you never leave water running when it is not needed.

When cooking with electricity or gas, use as much water as necessary to prevent food from burning or from boiling dry.

Never leave a pan unattended without waiting for it to boil and then turning down the heat. Allow liquid contents to reach boiling point in a covered pan, then immediately reduce the heat and allow food to simmer or steam gently.

Set your washing machine to an energy saving shorter wash cycle. After a short spin or tumble dry you can hang your laundry outside to dry naturally, or use a warm part of the home to hang it over a drying rack.

Single garments and small articles of clothing can be washed by hand and hung up to dry. Never use the washing machine to launder just one or two small items.

All these measures are both economical and energy saving, so you will save money and help to save the planet too.

Belena - You are absolutely right Laura. I should have added something about switching off electrical appliances when not in use. It slipped my mind that not everyone does this.
LauraT2009 - Excellent ideas here!! Other ways to save on electricity are to turn sockets off when you are not using them and to keep light use to a minimum. By having candlelight dinners you are also saving money as well as electricity
